Week of January 29 to February 2
Mon Spelling words for quiz on Friday (equivalent to exile). Review of parts of speech. Parts of Speech game. (Each student is dealt eight parts-of-speech cards. Trade with classmates and/or the teacher to get the cards you need. Goal: write an eight-word sentence incorporating all of the parts of speech on your cards.)
Hmwk: Add three more "free" parts of speech to the eight you collected in class. Create a total of five eight-word sentences using the parts of speech on your cards. (Three will not be used in each sentence.)
Tues Due: Parts of Speech game sentences. Label the words in the sentences appropriately. Share sentences with a partner. Are all words labelled correctly? Make adjustments in sentences--as necessary.
Hmwk: Complete Parts of Speech Worksheet. Prepare for a quiz on the Parts of Speech Worksheet.
Thurs Due: Parts of Speech Worksheet. Review (with notes on board) of parts of speech characteristics and definitions.
Hmwk: study for spelling quiz. Include a review of Words you should already know how to spell. Make necessary revisions to Parts of Speech Worksheet.
Fri Spelling quiz. Go over Parts of Speech Worksheet. Drill on usage pairs in Words you should already know how to spell.
Week of February 5 to 9
Mon Journal #37 (Travel adventure: real/imaginary). Spelling words for quiz on Friday (existing to fairly). Continue with Parts of Speech review. In today's journal writing, circle at least one example of each of the eight parts of speech. Copy sentences with circled items onto a new piece of paper (so that you don't have to turn in your journal writing).
Hmwk: finish writing out sentences that include all eight parts of speech and the second list on the board: proper noun, action verb, helping verb, linking verb, object of preposition, indefinite pronoun, adjective after a linking verb, adverb modifying an adj or adv, correlative conjunction).
Tues Due: parts-of-speech sentences. Journal #38 (On a day like today, I'd like to . . .). Parts of Speech quiz. Finish up ex. 3 & 5 wkst (from before parts-of-speech review) & ex. 7. Due today. No hwmk.
Thurs Journal #39 (My favorite form of precipitation . . .). Continue with parts of the sentence, chpt. 13. Note on board for chapter definitions.

Mon Spelling words for quiz on Friday (honest to index). Continue with subject complements activity. Trade sentence components with classmates to construct sentences. Write ten sentences, each containing a subject, verb, and subject complement. Label the subject complements as "pred adj" or "pred nom"--as appropriate. No hmwk.
Tues Direct objects. Notes on board. Direct Objects worksheet. Do ex. 21. (Directions for ex. 21: Make three columns on your paper. Write subjects in first column, verbs (including helping verbs) in second, and direct objects in third.)
Hmwk: Complete Direct Objects worksheet and Ex. 21. (See directions for ex. 21 above.)
