Mon Spelling words for quiz on Friday (ceasefire to colleague). Begin grammar unit: Parts of Speech, chpt. 12. Diagnostic test, pp. 341-2. Review nouns.
Hmwk: ex. 1 & 2.
Tues Journal #20 (group writing). Go over hmwk in class. Review compound nouns. Ex. 3 aloud in class.
Hmwk: read "The Pronoun," pp. 345-348. Do ex. 4.
Thurs Collect hwmk. Journal #21 (Upcoming events: Volleyball Tournament, WOPAM, Halloween). Circle nouns in your journal entry for today. Put boxes around pronouns. File journal entry in English notebooks. Noun & Pronoun Scavenger Hunt in pairs (or singly).

Thurs Journal #31 (Happy New Year!). Visual review of parts of speech. Create a visual to help you and someone else better understand how one part of speech works in a sentence. How does your part of speech function? Due: beginning of class Friday.
Hmwk: complete part-of-speech visual. Due tomorrow at the beginning of class.
Fri Due: part-of-speech visual. Journal #32 (Over vacation, did you read a good book, see an interesting movie, do something amazing for someone else?) On the back of your visual (or on a separate piece of paper) write five sentences suggested by your visual. Underline your part of speech in each sentence. Share with someone who worked on a different part of speech. Drill with a partner on the Words You Should Already Know How to Spell. No hmwk.
Week of January 8 to 12
Mon Spelling words for quiz on Friday (distribution to embassy). Journal #33 (Mid-winter break). Begin Chpt. 13, "Parts of the Sentence." Do ex. 1, 2, & 3 aloud in class. (Reserve diagnostic tests for review.) Do ex. 4 on paper. Due by end of class. No hmwk.
Tues Journal #34. Do ex. 6 and Rev. A, pp. 383-4. Due by end of class. No hmwk.
Thurs Review subjects and predicates. Do ex. 3 & 5 worksheet. Do ex. 7 (on back of worksheet). Due by end of class.

Fri Spelling quiz (distribution to embassy). Journal #35 (IF it had snowed . . .). Make components for subject/predicate activity for Tues. (Draw vertical line on notebook paper. Head first column Subjects. Head second column Predicates. Write ten complete subjects of four words or longer in the left column. Write ten complete predicates of five words or longer in the right column. Cut out subjects and predicates separately. Store in envelope with your name on the outside.) No hmwk.
Week of January 15 to 19 (End of Second Quarter and First Semester)
Mon M. L. King Day: No School
Tues Subject/predicate activity: Match your subjects and predicates up with other people's subjects and predicates to make complete (and funny?) sentences. Write down ten new sentences. Review for Parts of the Sentence quiz/test.
Thurs English 9 Exam: 10:45 to 12:15 (This will be a longish quiz over what we've covered so far in the Parts of the Sentence chapter.)
