Week of January 10 to 14
Mon Journal 16 (New beginnings: new year, new semester, new goals, new . . .?). Return final exam essays. "The Basic, No-Frills Essay: How to Get an "A" on an Academic Essay." Hmwk: Identify three features from "The Basic, No-Frills Essay" that would make your essay stronger. Do these things to your essay. (Use a new sheet of paper, not your essay! Keep your essay to re-submit with your changes.) Due Wed.
Wed Discuss essay revisions (especially more specific examples). Notes on the board about the difference between "telling" and "showing" in essays. Collect essay revisions (and original essay). Go to computer lab to begin research into E. M. Forster. Hmwk: Learn about E. M. Forster and his cultural milieu. Discover something that your classmates may not know.
Fri Report on homework. Share what you've learned. Begin reading A Room with a View.

Wed Distribute discussion questions. View "Florence" and "In Search of Tuscany" (videos available at the St. Helena Public Library). Hmwk: Prepare for class discussion. Bring questions and comments to class to enhance our class discussion.
Fri Journal. Discussion of novel. Hmwk: What is socialism? Is Mr. Emerson a socialist? What is transcendentalism? Could Mr. Emerson be a transcendentalist? Come to class on Monday with your answers.
Week of January 31 to February 4
Mon Check off evidence of work on Mr. Emerson, socialism, and transcendentalism. Discussion about Mr. Emerson, socialism, and transcendentalism. Begin watching A Room with a View. Hmwk: Think about and write notes for three of the discussion questions.

Fri (Basketball tournament) Check off complete rough drafts. Work period for projects. Hmwk: move to word-processed, semi-final draft.

Mon Peer reviewing of individual writing projects. Hmwk: polish projects, and complete individual parts of class project.
Wed Class project day: English tea. Presentation of individual writing projects. Hwmk: prepare for test.

Tues (Monday Classes) Intro to The Europeans, by Henry James. Begin reading The Europeans. (Chpt. 1 starts on p. 33.) Hmwk: read to p. 58 (chpts. 1 & 2).
Wed (Honor Choir Festival) In class & hmwk: read to p. 84 (chpts. 3 & 4).

Mon Discussion questions: write out answers to three questions. Turn in at least two before end of class. Hmwk: complete three discussion questions--if you didn't finish in class. Due Wed or before you leave for choir trip.
