Thurs Reading quiz. Journal #55/quiz ("Screwtape Proposes a Toast" was written quite awhile after C.S. Lewis completed SL. What is its relationship to the main body of letters? How does it shed further light on the Great Controversy? Are there additional insights into the nature of temptation and/or the nature of humans?) Each student selects a specific letter to summarize in terms of the temptations discussed. Hmwk: Complete paragraph summary of letter. Due Fri.
Fri Due: paragraph summary of Letter. Share summaries with class in chronological order. No hmwk.
Week of April 25 to 29
Mon (WASC Visit) Work in pairs or trios to summarize remaining letters so that's we'll have a complete summary of the book. To be completed by end of class. Hmwk: submit your paragraph summaries to Turnitin.com by midnight Tues, 4/26. (There are two separate assignments to allow you to submit both summaries.)
Wed (WASC Visit) Begin Screwtape Letters projects. Hmwk: rough draft of project.

Thurs Journal #56 (Shakespeare? Merchant of Venice? Plays in general?). Intro to The Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare. Discuss play and process for studying it. Distribute texts. Read from Charles and Mary Lambs' Tales from Shakespeare aloud in class. Week of May 16 to 20
Mon In-class project: make a relationship chart incorporating all significant characters in the play. Hmwk: complete relationship chart (due Wed).
Wed Journal #57 (Shylock: role, cast, protagonist? antagonist? as a Jew? relationships with others?) Due: relationship chart. In class discussion prep. Write notes on these questions: What is the play about? Is TMOV anti-semitic? Why or why not? Is Christianity an attractive religion as portrayed in TMOV? Why or why not? Hmwk: complete discussion prep notes to be checked off at the beginning of class Thurs.
Thurs Check off discussion prep notes. Journal #58 (Christianity in TMOV). TMOV discussion. Hmwk: Pick a passage (20 lines minimum) to memorize and present dramatically to the class on Wed/Thurs next week. Pairs are OK (40 lines minimum, 20 lines each). Begin memorization.
Fri In class practice for dramatic presentation. No assigned hmwk (but don't let me stop you continuing with your memorization!)
Week of May 23 to 27
Mon Final exam essay topics:
  • Is TMOV anti-semitic?
  • How is Christianity portrayed in TMOV?
  • Pick a theme in TMOV and discuss its portrayal in the play. (Theme ideas: prejudice, hatred, friendship, love, revenge, women's role/s in society, justice, mercy, divided loyalties, letter of the law vs. spirit of the law, etc. Can you think of another one?)

Discuss preparation for final exam essay. Select essay and begin notes in class. Hmwk: continue with memorization.

Wed Dramatic presentations of memorized passages. Hmwk: continue final exam prep.
Thurs Dramatic presentations of memorized passages. Hmwk: continue final exam prep.
