Week of January 10 to 14
Tues Journal 28 (New beginnings: new year, new semester, new goals, new . . .?). Rearrange English Notebooks for second semester. (Put all first semester handouts, journals, notes, assignments, and tests and quizzes at the back of the notebook. Keep the syllabus in the front.) Discussion about the junior class at Prep. Intro to Evangeline by Longfellow. Identify vocab words in first two sections. Hwmk: Read first two parts to prepare for oral reading on Thurs.
Thurs Journal 29 (The junior class: How I fit in with regard to the discussion last class period. Did the things we discussed fit you or not? How comfortable were you with the discussion?). Class participation syllabus addition and discussion about making choices that allow classmates to meet their goals, too. Work on definitions for the Evangeline vocab words. Begin oral reading of Evangeline. No hwmk.
Week of January 17 to 21
Tues Journal 30 (What I want people to understand about me: what I'm good at, what I care about, what I really like about life). Dictate spelling words for quiz next Tuesday. (You are responsible for checking your spelling to make sure you study the correct spelling! Any words missed on the quiz will be written out 25X each.) Continue oral reading of Evangeline. Continue work on vocab words. Hmwk: Do some background reading about the historical event upon which Evangeline is based. Write out notes (in your own words, in your own handwriting, with source/s) to bring to class. (This is what you will turn in for credit.) Be prepared to share what you discover. Write out spelling words missed on final exam 25 times. Due Thurs.
Thurs Journal 31 [Reflections on inauguration. Inauguration means "1) Formal induction into office" (American Heritage). The verb, inaugurate, comes from the Latin, inaugurare meaning "to practice augury," which is "the practice of divination" (Webster's) OR write a memory of a childhood place]. Collect final exam spelling words written out 25 times. Check off evidence of background reading (notes). Share with classmates what you discovered on the historical background of Evangeline. (File in Notes section of English notebook). Continue reading Evangeline. Continue work on vocab words. Hmwk: Study for spelling quiz.
Week of January 24 to 28
Tues Journal 32 (Reflections on Evangeline: what is unusual? what do you like? what do you dislike? what works? what doesn't work?). Spelling quiz (Any words missed will be written out 25 times each.) Continue reading Evangeline. Continue work on vocab words. Hwmk: write out missed spelling words 25 times each.
Thurs Collect missed spelling words written out 25 times. Journal 33 (My favorite winter thought and/or memory). Finish vocab word definitions. Finish reading Evangeline. Hmwk: Writing options 1) Write a new ending. Make it clear where you begin your plot change. 2) Modernize a section of the poem. Does modernization require a plot change? 3) A combination of the first two ideas. Due Tues. Be prepared to share in class.
Week of January 31 to February 4
Tues Check off writing options. Journal 34 (If you hadn't chosen to be here, where would you be? Dream. Imagine!). Share Evangeline writing. Poetic features of Evangeline worksheet. Hmwk: complete definitions on Evangeline worksheet. Due Thurs.
Thurs Check off hmwk. Journal 35 (Sports). Twenty minutes: find examples of poetic features. Share and discuss examples and definitions on Evangeline worksheet. Hwmk: continue finding examples for worksheet.
Week of February 7 to 11
Tues No Class: Monday schedule
Thurs (PUC Basketball Tournament) Journal 36 (Basketball, etc.) Complete discussion of examples and definitions on Evangeline worksheet. Review for test (next Tues.). Hmwk: prepare for Evangeline test. Study vocab, poetic features (blue worksheet), plot details and spelling words.
Week of February 14 to 18(SA Spirit Week)
Tues Test: Evangeline. Includes: plot details, vocab, poetic features (blue worksheet), and spelling words. Notebook check. Begin Huck Finn. Hwmk: Read to p. 39 for Thursday.
Thurs Complete reading Huck Finn through p. 39 before class. Reading quiz. Journal 37 (When do I feel most free? loved? successful? fun?). Huck Finn. Watch video: Mark Twain's America (available at PUC library: VTR PS1331 .M374 1990). Hwmk: Read to p. 118 by next Thursday.
Week of February 21 to 25
Tues No Class: Monday schedule. Hmwk: continue with Huck Finn reading!!!
Thurs Complete reading Huck Finn through p. 118 before class. Reading quiz. Journal 38 (Huck Finn: respectability, right vs. wrong, adventure vs. safety). Huck Finn. Watch video: first half of part one (approx. 55 min) of Ken Burn's Mark Twain (available at PUC library: VTR PS 1331 .M37 2001). Read to p. 175. Pay special attention to Huck's moral dilemma in Chapter XXXI.
Week of February 28 to March 4
Tues Complete reading Huck Finn through p. 175 before class. Reading quiz. Journal 39 (Huck's moral dilemma: how can he be so wrong about being so right?). Huck Finn. Watch video: second half of part one (approx. 55 min) of Ken Burn's Mark Twain. Hwmk: complete reading of Huck Finn.
Thurs Complete reading Huck Finn before class. Reading quiz. Journal 40 (What do you think about the ending?). Huck Finn. (Complete Ken Burns video--not done on Tues.) Discussion and test prep. Study and Discussion Questions. Hmwk: prepare for Huck Finn test.
Week of March 7 to 11
Tues Test: Huck Finn. After test, silently read Twain's "The War Prayer." No hmwk. Notebook check.
Thurs (Choir in England) Journal 41 (3rd quarter retrospective: What are you proud of? What do you wish you had done differently?) Watch The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Spring Break. Classes resume March 28.
