Week of January 10 to 14
Mon Journal 51 (New beginnings: new year, new semester, new goals, new . . . ?). Reorganize English notebooks for 2nd semester. (Move all 1st semester stuff to back of notebook--except syllabus.) Hmwk: review syllabus for quiz on Wed.
Tues Journal 52 (Academic performance first semester: what you liked, what you're going to change and how). Begin "The Parts of a Sentence," chpt. 13 in green grammar text. Do: Diagnostic Test A & B, pp. 376-377. Read: pp. 377 to 382. Do: ex. 1, 2, 4. Hmwk: Do ex. 3 & 5. Due Wed.
Wed Collect ex. 3 & 5. Journal 53 (What I wish people understood about me: what I'm good at, what I care about, what I really like about life). Syllabus quiz. Notes about subjects and predicates. Complete ex. 1, 2, & 4 (from yesterday). Start ex. 6 & Rev Ex A--if you have time. No hmwk.
Thurs Complete ex. 6 & Rev Ex A. Read pp. 384 to 392. No hwmk. Happy holiday!
Week of January 17 to 21
Mon No School: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Tues Journal 54 (When do you really feel free?). Dictate spelling words for quiz next Tues. More notes about subjects and predicates. Do ex. 7, 8, 9, 10 (only 5 sentences, 2 with nouns of direct address), 11, 12. Hmwk: Make up ten original sentences. Underline the complete subjects once and the complete predicates twice. Circle the simple subjects and verbs (including helping verbs). Include in your ten sentences one sentence that is a question, one sentence that begins with There, one sentence that has the predicate first and the subject at the end, one sentence with a compound subject, and one sentence with a compound verb. Due Wed.
Wed Collect sentences. Continue working on ex. 7-12. Hwmk: Writing Assignment, p. 388: "Write a paragraph about your choice of an elective you would like to take next semester. Explain why you are choosing this subject. Add sentence variety by placing at least three of your subjects in a position other than at the beginning." Due Thurs.
Thurs Collect hmwk paragraphs. Complete ex. 7-12 by end of class today. Hmwk: Do Rev. Ex. B (on worksheet) for Mon.
Week of January 24 to 28
Mon Collect Rev. Ex. B hmwk wkst. Journal 55. (Why I'm glad I live here and not somewhere else OR Why I wish I lived somewhere else and not here). Intro complements. Do ex. 15, 16, & 17. If you finish before the end of class, quietly study spelling words. Hmwk: study for spelling quiz. (All missed words will be written out 25 times each.)
Tues Journal 56 (My happiest winter memory and/or thought). Spelling quiz. (All missed words will be written out 25 times each.) Intro subject complements. Reminder about crossing out prep phrases. Do ex. 19 to 21. Hmwk: Complete ex. 19 to 21--if not completed in class.
Wed Collect ex. 19 to 21. Intro to indirect objects. Do ex. 22 in class. Start complements worksheet. Hmwk: complete worksheet (if not finished in class). Write out words missed on the spelling quiz 25 times each.
Thurs Collect spelling words. Copy principle/principal notes and sentences from board. Fill in sentence blanks with principle or principal. Go over complements worksheet in class. Hmwk: complete principal/principle sentences. You are responsible for understanding the correct usage of these words. We will re-visit them on a spelling quiz in the future.
Week of January 31 to February 4
Mon Journal 57 (If you hadn't chosen to be here, where would you be? Dream. Imagine!). Begin Rev. Ex. E (p. 407), ex. 23 & 24 (directions: write down and identify the complements), Rev. Ex. F (p. 410), and ex. 25. These will be collected at the end of class on Wed. No hmwk.
Tues Journal 58 (By RJ & SB: If you were any drink, what would you be? Who would drink you? Where? Under what conditions?). Continue working on exercises due at the end of class on Wed. Hmwk: Hmwk: Posttests 1 (A & B) & 2 (on pink sheet).
Wed Collect homework on pink sheet. Journal 59 (Sports). Complete exercises due at end of class today. Chapter review worksheet. Hmwk: Complete chapter review worksheet. This will be checked off at the beginning of class tomorrow.
Thurs Check off completed chapter review worksheets. Go over chapter review worksheets, sharing sentences and checking answers. Hwmk: study for test on Tuesday.
Week of February 7 to 11
Mon No School: Staff Development Day.
Tues (Monday classes) Test: Parts of the Sentence. Notebook Check.
Wed (PUC Basketball Tournament) Journal 60 (topic of your choice--6 minutes with a kitchen timer). Hand back Parts of Speech test. Spelling words for next Tuesday's quiz. Hwmk: complete timed journal #60 and begin studying spelling words for next Tuesday's quiz.
Thurs (PUC Basketball Tournament) Check off Journal #60. Journal 61. Intro Cyrano de Bergerac, by Edmond Rostand. Assign textbooks. Rd. back cover blurb and "Note" (at the beginning of the book). Plot outline. Hmwk: continue studying spelling words for next Tuesday's quiz.
Week of February 14 to 18
Mon Journal 62 (Valentine's Day). Assign parts and begin reading Cyrano de Bergerac (to bottom of p. 9). Hmwk: study spelling words for quiz tomorrow.
