Wed Journal #3, read hmwk story ending in group. Group to pick one to read aloud to class. Read "The Owl Who Was God" by Thurber. Hmwk: answer the question, Can you fool too many of the people too much of the time? Due Thurs., Aug. 19.
Thurs Journal #4, three paragraphs on "The Owl Who Was God." Handed out "Unicorn in the Garden" story endings that need to be re-written and re-submitted. Due: Mon., Aug. 23. Hmwk: complete paragraphs. Due: Mon., Aug. 23.

Thurs Journal #8. Check off hmwk list. Paragraph organization notes on board. Write paragraph using list. Analyze your paragraph using board notes. Hmwk: Revise your paragraph based on the notes (due Mon).

Tues Journal #10, complete reading of "Chee's Daughter." Answer questions #1-11, 14 in class.

Journal #11. Read "The Interlopers" (lit text pp. 269-274) aloud. Hmwk: Creative writing options: either write a sequel to this story (what happens next?) OR go back about 3 paragraphs and write a new, different ending. Edit, proofread, and revise your story ending and bring it to class for Friday, Sept. 3.

Thurs Journal #12. Share your story ending in a group of 3-4. Turn it in. Do qstns # 1-8, 11-13, 15 (p. 275) in class.

Mon Journal #14. Read "Civil Peace" (lit text, p. 39) and do qstns #1-7 & 11-15 in class.
Tues Journal #15. In-class test review activity: Develop a list of characters for each story. Write a statement of significance for each. Identify main conflict in each story. Identify the significance of the conflict to each character. What is/are the theme/s for each story? Are they implied or stated? Hmwk: Prepare for test, Wednesday.
Wed Test: stories we've read so far and writing paragraphs. Hmwk: bring outside reading book to class on Thursday. Print out grades from RENweb. Have parent/guardian sign. Bring to class on Thursday. (Put into "Assignments" section of notebook.)

Mon Journal #17. Pass back graded papers and test. Discuss examples of well-written paragraphs. (Handout) Revise test paragraphs. Hmwk: Write a paragraph about the main thing you learned about yourself on the biology trip to Yosemite. Due Tuesday. [Spelling words for quiz on Thursday: occasion, somewhere, specific, achieve, planned/planed, advice/advise, satisfied, because, control, nothing, decipher, pursue, illegal, possession, they're/their/there, spontaneous]
Tues Journal #18. Check off Yosemite paragraphs. Paragraph revision. (Showing vs. Telling handout) Peer review for topic sentence, examples, and concluding sentence. Hmwk: Word process Yosemite paragraph. Bring hard copy AND digital copy (disk, CD, or send as e-mail to teacher, etc.) to class on Wednesday. Spelling words: write out each word ten times and for each word in a usage group write the definition and use it correctly in a sentence (quiz on Thursday).
Wed Journal #19. Collect spelling quiz preparation homework. Intro Turnitin.com. Go to computer lab to register with Turnitin.com and submit paragraph. Hmwk: study for spelling quiz.
Thurs Journal #20. Spelling quiz. Reading orally in class: "Catch the Moon," pp. 63-69. No Hmwk.
Week of October 4 to 8
Mon Journal #21. "Catch the Moon" options (pick one): qstns. (p. 70), art (p. 71), poetry (p. 71), or prose (p. 71). Hmwk: complete "Catch the Moon" option. Due Tues.
Tues Collect "Catch the Moon" hmwk. Journal #22. Read "By Any Other Name," pp. 479-485 aloud in class. Questions #5-10, 13, 15, p. 486. Hmwk: complete qstns. Due Wed.
Wed Collect "By Any Other Name" questions. Journal #23. Read "Atmosphere," p. 486. Students identify sections of the story that create the atmosphere of the Anglo-Indian school and Santha's home. Hmwk: Write a polished description of your favorite place. Include "descriptive details" to convey the atmosphere of the place. The reader should be able to see clearly what you feel about the place without your having to express the feelings directly--just by the descriptive details you incorporate. Also, bring a visual representation of the atmosphere of your favorite place. (Can be a drawing, photograph, object, collage, etc.) Due Thurs.
Thurs Journal #24. Peer review atmosphere paragraphs: read aloud to group, explain accompanying visual representation, & have group select best descriptive detail (Mark with star.). Turn in atmosphere paragraphs and visual representation (or description thereof--if you aren't able to attach it to your paper) before end of class. No hmwk.
Week of October 11 to 15 (End of First Quarter)
Mon Journal #25. Read aloud "The Needle," pp. 420-429 in blue lit book. Qstns: 1, 2 (first half), and Language Workshop by end of class. No hmwk.
Tues Journal #26. Discuss the role of fools in literature. Read aloud two Isaac Bashevis Singer stories: "Shrewd Todie and Lyzer the Miser" and "The Mixed-Up Feet and the Silly Bridegroom." While listening to the stories, make notes about the role of fools and/or foolishness in the stories. Hmwk: Prepare English notebook for the notebook check tomorrow.
Wed English notebook check today! Video: "I'm a Fool" (based on a short story by Sherwood Anderson). While watching the video, add to your notes from yesterday about the role of the fools and/or foolishness in this work. Hmwk: Select (and put in your book bag!) a reading book for class on Thursday.
Thurs Journal #27. Free reading. You must bring your own book or read one selected for you from the shelves at the back of the classroom. (Bringing your own book would be much better!)
