MonNo School: MLK, Jr. Day
Tues[Inauguration] Hand back papers. Go over semester spelling quiz and short story test. Discuss writing good "significance" answers. Leave all notebooks on shelf. No hmwk.
Wed[PUC Basketball Tournament] Journal #22 (Untimed: Where would you be if you could be anywhere? $$$/time/space no object.) Begin grammar unit: "Parts of Speech," Chpt. 12. Introduce reasons for studying grammar. Diagnostic test, pp. 341-2. Go over Diagnostic Test in class.
Hmwk: Study for spelling quiz.
Thur[PUC Basketball Tournament] Spelling quiz. Review nouns. Do ex. 1-3 aloud in class. Create list of 50 nouns (20 items in this classroom, 5 proper nouns, 5 ideas, 10 common nouns that name people, 3 common nouns for places, 3 proper nouns for places, 4 your choice--label as "common" or "proper"). Share lists. No hmwk.
Week of January 26 to 30
MonSpelling pre-test. Review noun activities from last week. Move on to pronouns. Talk about languages as "inflected" (Spanish, French) or "order" (English). Personal pronouns chart on board. (Personal pronouns are an inflected part of our otherwise order language.) Work on ex. 4 together (1 paper/2 people). Go over ex. 4.
Hmwk: Do ex. 5 before class tomorrow.
Tues[Academy Day] Due: ex. 5. Check off and go over homework. Continue with pronouns. Notes on board about "antecedent": the noun to which the pronoun refers. (Ex: Teresa is making a cake. She reads the recipe for it very carefully. Teresa is the antecedent for the pronoun she. Cake is the antecedent for the pronoun it.) Do Writing Application B, p. 349. Include pronouns so that you don't have to needlessly repeat nouns. Make sure the pronoun/antecedent connections are clear so that your writing is not confusing like the example passage. Share sentences with clear pronoun/antecedent connection in class. No hmwk.
WedContinue with Parts of Speech: adjectives. Notes on board. Do ex. 6 together. Work in pairs on ex. 7. Share sentences with classmates. Begin rev. ex. A.
Hmwk: Finish rev. ex. A--if not finished in class--and study for spelling quiz.
ThurSpelling quiz. Journal #23 (Group writing: "Once upon a time . . ."). Divide into groups of no more than four students. First student sets the scene, introduces at least one character and gets the action going. Pass to the right. Next student continues the new story in front of him/her. Pass to right again, etc. Last time, student concludes story. Share stories and circle 10 nouns, box 5 pronouns, and draw arrows from 5 adjectives to the nouns they modify. File into Journal #23 slot in English notebook. No hmwk.

MonSpelling pre-test. Pass back graded papers. Continue with Parts of Speech: verbs. Notes on board about action verbs. Do ex. 9 & 10.

No School: Staff Development Day

TuesSpelling pre-test. Continue with Parts of Speech. Review of verbs and verb phrases: "Action, Linking, Helping: What's the Difference" wkst. Write sentences containing these verb phrases.
Hmwk: Complete worksheet and sentences started in class today. Due tomorrow--at the beginning of class.
Wed Collect hmwk from yesterday: Sentences with verb phrases and yellow worksheet. Continue with Part of Speech chapter: adverbs. Do ex. 14 (p. 361), 16 (p. 363), 17 (pp. 363-5), & 18 (p. 365). Due Thursday at the beginning of class.
Hmwk: Study for spelling quiz. Complete ex. 14, 16, 17, & 18 if you didn't finish in class.
ThurSpelling quiz (Choose any 15 words from the list). Have students save homework papers. We'll go over them next week. Do Adverb worksheet. TuesSpelling pre-test. Begin "Parts of the Sentence" chapter. Do Diagnostic Test and ex. 1, and go over them in class. Parts of the sentence notes on board. Notes introducing stuctures that follow VTs and VLs.
Hmwk: Do ex. 2 and 3. Due at the beginning of class tomorrow.
WedParts of the Sentence. Go over ex. 2 and 3. Review simple subjects and complete subjects. Do ex. 4 and share in class.
Hmwk: Finish ex. 5 & 6. (Due at the beginning of class tomorrow.)

WedParts of the Sentence. Notes on board about prep phrases and identifying simple subjects and verbs. Do ex. 7 & 8 with these directions: Copy each sentence on your paper. Cross out all prep phrases. ID the verb and underline it twice. Ask "Who or what (verb)?" The answer is the simple subject. Underline the simple subject once.
Hmwk: Study for spelling quiz. Complete ex. 7 and 8. Due at the beginning of class tomorrow.
ThurSpelling quiz. Go over ex. 7 and 8. Do Identifying simple subjects and verbs worksheet. No hmwk. Have a great vacation!
