Esther: Reading Comprehension Questions

Chapter 1

  1. How long was the first feast (just for the king's friends)?
  2. Then, how long was the party of all the people?
  3. What was Queen Vashti's infraction? What was her punishment? Why?

Chapter 2

  1. What was the important personal trait needed to make a young woman eligible for the "call up" at the beginning of this chapter?
  2. What information about herself did Mordecai tell Esther to keep secret?
  3. Describe the preparation process for the young women in the palace?
  4. After the visit with the king, the young women went to a different palace. Some never saw the king again except under what circumstance?
  5. How did Mordecai save the king's life at the end of Chpt. 2?

Chapter 3

  1. Why did Mordecai refuse to bow to Haman, the new prime minister?
  2. How did Haman decide the right day and month to carry out his evil plot?
  3. Haman was not completely honest and open when he asked the king to issue a decree to kill all of the Jews. Explain.

Chapter 4
