Pass back in-class Chaucer essay (semester final exam). Analyze (notes on board: mark thesis statement, topic sentences, examples, use of quotes) and revise in-class Chaucer essays. MonGive out semester grade printouts. Pass back papers. Remove first semester assignments from binders and recycle (or save). Journal Writing #12 (Poetry: love it or hate it? Tell about a "poetry" event in your life. Write out the lyrics of a favorite song. Is it a poem? Why? Why not?) Background on poetry as a literary genre. Share song lyrics. Are song lyrics poetry?
Hmwk: Finish writing out several stanzas of lyrics for your favorite song. Be ready to share in class tomorrow.

TuesSonnets. "The Sonnet in the Twentieth Century," by Anthony Robinson. Look at some sonnets written recently. Browse in "Contemporary Sonnet" (the leading literary publication dedicated to the sonnet), and pick one that appeals to you. Prepare to share it with the class.
