Hmwk: Think about your own experience. Have you ever been made to do something that you didn't want to do? Did it turn out well? Not so well?

Week of November 23 to 27: Thanksgiving Vacation
Week of November 30 to December 4
MonSpelling pre-test. Discussion of Journal Writings #3 & 4. What are the conditions that make the statement (See Fri. above) true or false? Introduce narrative essay (an essay that is supported by a story or stories). Review of writing process: we've done lots of thinking. Now we need to organize those thoughts. Create a one-sentence thesis statement and write it at the top of a piece of paper.
Hmwk: On the paper with your thesis statement, write bullet point notes of the chronology of a story (or stories) that support/s your thesis statement. Go for details, details, DETAILS! (More details = less work tomorrow when you begin drafting and a better grade when I check off the organizing stage tomorrow.) Due tomorrow at the beginning of class.
TuesDue: Organizing stage of the narrative essay. Check off thesis statements and story chronologies. Review format of strong thesis statements. Begin drafting on computers.
Hmwk: Complete rough-rough draft. Due tomorrow at the beginning of class. Be able to pull up your rough-rough draft on a school computer.

Due: Rough-rough draft of narrative essay (on a school computer). Underline the thesis statement in your essay. Discuss paragraphing and topic sentences. "Introductions & Conclusions" (pdf from the Princeton Writing Program). Attend to paragraph breaks and topic sentences in your narrative essay, and write an introduction.
Hmwk: Study for spelling/vocab quiz. Complete paragraphing, topic sentences, and introduction--if not finished in class. Be able to open the REVISED rough draft on a school computer in
class on Thursday.

Thurs

Due: Revised rough draft (WITH introduction, paragraphing, and topic sentences). Spelling/vocab quiz. Review "Conclusions" section of "Introductions & Conclusions" handout. Work on conclusion to essay. By Monday, you should be able to open on a school computer an essay that has:

  • An introduction that attracts the reader's attention, identifies the subject, and sets an appropriate tone for your essay;
  • An underlined thesis statement (last sentence of the introductory paragraph) that tells your reader clearly what you are going to prove in the essay;
  • Paragraphs, and a topic sentence for each paragraph that tells the reader what that part of the thesis statement that paragraph will prove;
  • A concluding paragraph that brings the essay to a graceful close.

MonSpelling pre-test. Finish checking off rough drafts. Everyone should have an essay with the four items identified in last Thursday's assignments. Print out a hard copy once you've added a conclusion.

Due: Hard copy of narrative essay. Self evaluation of narrative essay. Proofread as you go through your essay. Academic essay format reminders:

  • Double spaced. (NO extra spacing between paragraphs.)
  • One-inch margins on all sides.
  • Times, New Roman, 12 pt. font
  • Name, Class, Assignment, and Date in upper right corner (inside margins)

Hmwk: Complete self evaluation of narrative essay. Revise essay based on self evaluation findings. Print out a hard copy to bring to class. (Have the hard copy ALREADY PRINTED when you walk in the classroom door!)

WedPeer review of narrative essay.
Hmwk: Revise essay based on credible peer review findings. (Remember, this is your paper. If a peer has suggested something that you think isn't really a good idea, feel free to ignore the advice. Ask if you have questions.) Print out a NEW, REVISED draft to have in class tomorrow. Study for spelling/vocab quiz

1. Briefly summarize plot line for each work.
2. According to each story, what does "smart" look like? (This question can be answered as Journal Writing #8)
3. How does each story define a "fool"? (This can be answered as Journal Writing #9)
4. Summarize the different definitions of "smart" and "foolish" (from the stories, not the dictionary) Can you see some patterns? Some similarities?
5. Do the stories' definitions fit your life experience? Explain.
6. Do "smarts" and "foolishness" only apply to academics? Explain.

Hmwk: Work on test review (Test review will be accepted for credit only right before test is taken.)
