My
Lai Massacre
On March 16, 1968 the American boys of Charlie Company, 11 Brigade, American
Division, killed over 100 unarmed women, children and old men in the South
Vietnamese village of My Lai. For many Americans, this incident was chilling
proof of the argument made by social scientists since the end of World
War Two that the kind of obedience to authority that led to the Holocaust
was not unique to Nazi ideology or German culture - but could happen anywhere.
